Life saving device that takes lives?

Japanese airbag manufacturer Takata has recalled millions of their frontal airbags and the number only continues to rise. Their “safety” devices have taken 16 lives and caused almost 200 injuries so far. Two of the twelve deaths hit very close to home for us at The Merman Law Firm here in Houston, Texas.

According to reports, 35-year-old Carlos Solis of Spring, Texas died in his brother’s arms after an accident he had in his 2002 Honda Accord on January 18, 2015. Investigators classified this accident as “minor” as there was only minimal damage to the vehicles involved. However, Carlos was found to have a piece of shrapnel from his airbag lodged into his neck which ultimately caused his death. Honda claims to have sent out recall notices for this, but Carlos was never informed about it after buying the vehicle from a used car dealer.

March 31, 2016 was a shockingly tragic day in Richmond, Texas when 17-year-old Huma Hanif got into a fender-bender in her 2002 Honda Civic. Huma should have been able to walk away from this incident. Instead, she was dead in a matter of seconds from the crash. Huma was a victim of the Takata airbag that sent shards of metal into her neck rather than saving her from any minor injuries she would have probably endured without it.

We urge you to please check your vehicle for recalls at https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/ and continue to do so because The United States Department of Transportation expect the number of affected vehicles to keep rising. If you or a loved one have been injured by a Takata airbag, please contact The Merman Law Firm today for a free consultation.
